WILDLIFE EXPERT LARRY BATTSON BRINGS THE DANGERS OF THE DESERT TO THE COLUMBUS SPORTFISHING & TRAVEL SHOW
COLUMBUS, OH -- Now in his 20th year of entertaining sport show audiences, veteran wildlife handler, Larry Battson, will present his “Rattlesnake Roundup,” an exciting exhibit that brings dangerous, desert creatures indoors, at the brand new Columbus Sportfishing & Travel Show, January 28 through January 31, 1999.
Set in a simulated Southwest desert made up of sand, cactus and rock, the exhibit will include numerous species' of rattlesnakes including the Diamond Back, one of our country's most dangerous snakes, as well as gila monsters, the only poisonous lizards found in the United States, and tarantulas.
“'Rattlesnake Roundup' is a thrilling show that gives a whole new dimension to bringing The Wild Kingdom indoors. Unlike the zoo, there is no glass separating you from the highly-poisonous creatures,” says Battson. “The rattlesnakes are fully capable of delivering an extremely dangerous bite. They are untamed and have a full supply of venom.”
The gila monster is known as one of the only venomous lizards in the world. These large reptiles have a well-deserved reputation of delivering fierce bites and not letting go. “With its sluggish behavior and benign disposition, this lizard must be treated with extreme caution. It can bite quickly and hold on tenaciously,” says Battson.
The tarantula, the world's largest spider, has venom contained in sacs at the base of its fangs that is slightly toxic to mammals. There is a risk of developing a hypersensitivity or allergic response to the tarantula's body hairs or bite, but for the most part they are not lethal, according to Ohio State University Department of Entomology.
Battson has appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, The Today Show, The Discovery Channel's Animal Planet and has worked with the crew of The Wildlife Kingdom. He aso lectures to approximately 300 schools every year, presenting various wild animals and emphasizing their importance to the environment.
